When I’m talking to friends or co-workers about buying furniture, I always tell them to make a mock-up. Creating mock-ups is the easiest way to see if a piece of furniture will fit with your style before buying it.
Buying furniture online can be a challenge because you can’t feel the material or test it out first. However, the convenience of buying furniture online is like no other. It’s just so easy – and it often ships free because it’s over a certain amount. Buying furniture online also gets rid of the hassle of figuring out how to get the furniture home from the store.
If I wasn’t buying furniture or decor online, I was picking it up in the store. However, it was typically on a whim. So, when I would get home, the styles wouldn’t fit. Creating a mock-up allows you to ensure the style of the item you’re looking to buy fits exactly the way you want it to. After I started creating mock-ups of the furniture or decor piece in my space, the returns slowed down so much, and I actually loved what I purchased.
After I told my friends about creating a mock-up, their first question was ‘What’s that’ or ‘How’? So, I thought I would share with you guys!
Steps To Create An Interior Mock-Up
To create my mock-ups, I like to use Keynote. I use Keynote at work almost every day, so I’m always learning new tricks, and just applied this one to my shopping skills. All newer Mac computers will have Keynote already installed. If yours doesn’t have it installed, just visit the Apple store and search for ‘Keynote’. I will list out the steps for you all below!
Take a Picture of Your Space
After taking a picture of your space, airdrop it to your computer. Airdropping keeps the best quality version of your image. Then, drag and drop into your keynote.
Find The Furniture You Already Have
If you already included all of your furniture in the picture, that’s great! If you hadn’t, find your furniture, or something that looks like your furniture online. The picture I used in my original mock-up was a builders photo, so it was a blank space at the time. I actually like having a blank space photo because if I ever decided to change something out, I am able to just delete the piece of furniture I have in the mock-up.
Find Furniture You’re Wanting To Test Out
Visit the retailer’s site you want to test furniture from. Then right-click on the photo and ‘save image as’. If you aren’t able to save the image, screenshotting will work as well. A few of my interior favorites are West Elm, CB2, World Market, and Target!
Drag and Drop The Image Into Keynote, Then Remove the Background
This is the part that will blow your mind. Click on your image, then click on ‘Format’ at the top right-hand side of the toolbar. Next, select the middle tab ‘Image’. Click ‘Instant Alpha’ and click and hold down on the background of the image. Move your finger out on your keypad to select more of the background to delete. Keep deleting sections of the image until the background is gone.
Place Your Furniture Where You Want It In Your Home
And now, you’ve got yourself a home mock-up. I typically copy and paste the same slide a few times, then replace one main piece of furniture. I’ve found this gives me the best picture of the specific item I’m looking to buy and isn’t as overwhelming.
Hope Y’all found that helpful! If you have any Keynote questions, feel free to comment below 🙂
